Why Palestine?
Palestine is the cradle of messages and the country of civilizations. It is the country of goodness, figs, olives, almonds, peaches, pomegranates and dates. It has distinct products that have been inherited for generations, reflecting the experience of grandparents and the creativity of grandchildren.
Historians of ancient times agree that Palestine has the oldest city in the world, Jericho, and the first agricultural settlement to appear with a social organization and a productive economy. Banana farms, watermelons, oranges, and grapefruits are Jericho’s most famous agricultural products.
According to UNESCO, “the first permanent settlement on the site of Jericho developed near the Ein es-Sultan spring between 9,500 and 9000 BCE. Jericho is described in the Hebrew Bible as “the city of palm trees.”
Palestine has been throughout the ages and is still the focus of the world's attention to this day. and has witnessed several types of conflicts. Based on what the American historian James Henry Breasted mentioned in his book “Antiquity”, there is no doubt that this struggle over Palestine has economic reasons as well, because of its unique geographical location, to which goods were brought from all parts of the earth, east and west, and trade caravans traveled to and from Palestine, carrying various goods of all that one needs.
Agricultural products major sources of income
The agricultural sector has been on decline over the past decade due to numerous economic and political challenges. Nevertheless, the sector remains of great significance to the Palestinian people due to both the sector's traditional role in the Palestinian society and its economic footprint. Even though the development of the sector faces many obstacles it continues to be characterized by strong economic potential. First, many of the Palestinian agricultural products have secured good markets both locally and in the other regions. Agricultural products are among the major sources of foreign income, accounting for around 18% of the total exports of goods. Second, the sector has traditionally been one of the main employers for the Palestinians. Given the high availability and affordability of the labour force, agricultural production can be scaled up at a comparatively low cost.
Main obstacles to developing the agricultural sector are the pressing need to resolve numerous local land disputes between the Palestinians and the Israelis, there is also a need to ease the regulation on the water supply and the imports of fertilizers.

2 American archaeologist and historian James Henry Breasted speaks about this in his book Antiquity, saying: “Palestine has been able to gather in its markets people from every country, nation, and tongue. One can witness in those markets what the Egyptian handmade of the most precious jewels, various copper vessels and various ivory products, The pottery of the Aegean islands, the red Hittite ceramics, and the Babylonian wool products. The common means of transportation were the donkeys that were seen here and there, that disturbed with their loud voices above the noise of the markets. They were brought from the banks of the Nile and the Euphrates... And since Palestine is considered the bridge between Asia and Africa, there were mixed civilizations in it. Egypt, Babylon, Phoenicia, the Aegean countries and Asia Minor blended in a style unparalleled from the ancient East. And as trade met, the warring armies met on their land.

Moreover, Medjool dates have a distinctive creamy taste. What adds strength and attractiveness to Mejdool dates is the proper way in which they are dealt with even before their maturity. Local producers are taking care of the health of the palm trees and they cover Mejdool dates with bags to protect them from insects and other agricultural pests. Medjool dates are picked manually and transported, sorted and packed using the latest technologies and according to international quality standards. Dates are stored in frozen warehouses at a temperature of 18 degrees below zero. The Palestinian Medjool date producers are keen to control quality and follow all procedures that are in line with the requirements of international quality systems, and they have ISO (14001) quality certifications.
Foreign trade is essential for the Palestinian economy
Palestine has a negative external balance on goods and services. In 2016 it equaled -$5.2 billion. Both the imports and the exports of goods and services grew continuously since 2009. Overall, Palestine exports 196 products with revealed comparative advantage, including commodities, manufactured goods, and agricultural products. The major destinations of the Palestinian exports are Israel, Jordan, and the UAE. The major origins of imports are Israel, China, and Turkey.
The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) figures show that poverty rates are increasing in the occupied Palestinian territories in 1967, reaching 43.9 percent. The prevailing unemployment rate was highest among young people aged 15-24 years, reaching 64.7 percent. The poverty rate in the Gaza Strip reached 53.0 percent in 2017, which is more than four times the poverty rate in the West Bank, which is about 13.9 percent.
Unemployment rates have drastically proliferated, all donor programmes have failed to resolve unemployment and relevant issues within Palestinian society, most particularly in the Gaza Strip. There is a need to create a decent work.
Foreign trade sector plays an important role in the Palestinian economy, both in terms of its size or its structural and developmental impact, because of many factors related to its impact on the different economic branches, the labor market, the balance of payments, and price levels on one hand, and its primary role in providing the local market of its needs from different intermediate products and consumer goods.
The Palestinian foreign trade sector suffers from deep structural distortions resulting from the policies used by the Israeli occupation during the past decades. The overall structure of the Palestinian economy is based on a weak production base and infrastructure due to its economic dependence on the Israeli economy. Another imbalance that the Palestinian economy suffers from is the gap between GDP and Gross National Product, and if we look at GDP data, we find that total consumption exceeds GDP. In the same time the Palestinian labor market suffers from the dependence on Israeli labor market, which has serious repercussion on the economy because of repeated closures.
Following Oslo Agreement, the Palestinian Authority has given political and economic powers in the autonomous areas in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, an atmosphere of optimism began to prevail in the Palestinian areas, and these areas witnessed a relative recovery from economic activities due to the influx of aid from donor countries, and consequently the public spending increased du to need to establish government institutions and Infrastructure projects, and other spending related to establishing law and regulations. With the beginning of the transitional period, the Palestinian Authority signed many economic agreements with neighboring countries and the United States and Europe (the European Partnership Agreement). However, the most important of which is the Paris Economic Agreement, which unfortunately led to the consolidation of the economic dependence of the Palestinian economy on Israel. The Palestinian trade policies and the concluded economic agreements did not help to expand and diversify the local production base, but rather led to a decline in the competitiveness of Palestinian products against imports and an increase in the chronic deficit in the trade balance during the period 1995-2000 due to an increase in imports of consumer and manufactured goods.
