Sibolive Soap Dead Sea
From a modest kitchen in her small house in the town of Asira al-Shamaliya, near the city of Nablus (north), Palestinian Ikhlas Swalha (46 years old) embarked on a journey to establish her own soap factory in the industrial zone of Jericho, in the eastern occupied West Bank.
Swalha, who holds an intermediate degree in "Dentistry," worked for about 16 years in her field, then opened the first mushroom farm in the West Bank. Since 2002, she began making soap from olive oil and natural materials available in Palestine.
After 15 years of scientific research, experimentation, production, and local marketing, Swalha managed to own the "Palestinian Soap House – Saba" factory. While overseeing the work in her newly established factory in the industrial zone of Jericho, she explained that her project is inspired by "nature's pharmacy," blending tradition with creativity using scientific and studied methods to produce the finest quality soap from olive oil. The Saba factory produces 11 types of soap, each containing 74% olive oil in addition to other materials.
The factory produces various kinds of soap, some containing "olive oil, thyme, lavender, lemon, honey, camel milk, dates, charcoal derived from olive wood, Dead Sea mud, almonds, and roses." No dyes are used in Saba's products, as each product takes the color of the natural material from which it is made.
Alongside her, her husband Jaafar Al-Shuli and her son "Imad" work in the factory, along with two female workers. She aspires to increase the number of workers to 30. Swalha recalls her start in the business, saying: "In the beginning, I had nothing. The idea appealed to me, and I started by agreeing with a Palestinian farmer to barter olive oil for the soap produced." She adds, "The quantity was marketed through a local Palestinian organization, and the first return motivated me to continue and expand."
She points out that she started with simple, homemade tools, and now she has a factory with modern equipment and technology, meeting high standards and specifications, and obtaining the necessary licenses from the relevant Palestinian authorities. She smiles and continues her work, saying, "Here, my life's dream has come true, and the continued success of this is my utmost hope." Swalha leveraged her husband's expertise, who previously worked as a bank manager in Nablus, to manage her project and market her products.
In a special room in her factory where she displays her products, Swalha explained the types and benefits of her products to a visiting foreign delegation, highlighting that each product has specific benefits for skin care. She explains that camel milk soap, for example, is used to care for skin suffering from eczema, before showing pictures of cases with the condition, before and after using the soap.
Jaafar Al-Shuli (63 years old), Swalha's husband, uses his previous banking experience to market the Saba factory products. While packaging the soap products, he said, "Our product is purely Palestinian. We buy the oil from Palestinian farmers, as well as the honey, camel milk, and the mineral-rich Dead Sea mud." He added, "Our products are safe and environmentally friendly."
